An imperfect smile can cause Newington, CT area patients to feel self-conscious about the way their teeth look. Self-esteem may drop, and patients may hide their smile in social situations. However, it doesn’t have to be that way for long! Thanks to the team at Cedar Mountain Dental, men and women can ask about cosmetic procedures that can be used to address a chipped or cracked tooth caused by injury.

What methods of repair are available for chipped or cracked teeth?

Drs. Zach Korwin and Gary Toubman are dentist at Cedar Mountain Dental who can assess a patient’s smile and determine the best treatment option available. When it comes to chipped or cracked teeth, patients have a few restorations to choose from:

  • Dental crown – if a tooth near the back of the mouth, such as a molar, has experienced breakage, the best solution is that of a dental crown. Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as “caps,” are porcelain restorations that are made to cover the exposed area of the tooth. These are fabricated to the specifications of the patient’s existing teeth to ensure seamless integration.
  • Porcelain veneers – for the teeth near the front of the smile, porcelain veneers are often recommended. Veneers are very thin facings made of porcelain that are bonded over the tooth to cover imperfections. These restorations can last many years with proper care and are a great solution for gapped or broken teeth.
  • Composite resin bonding – another material that can cover imperfections is composite resin bonding. This clay-like material can be administered onto the surface of the tooth, hardened with a special light, and filed and polished to look exactly like natural tooth enamel. It can be done in one appointment, but does need to be replaced ever few years as it is susceptible to staining.
