Every smile is unique in color, form, and other features. For patients who are looking to enhance their smile, be it in color, shape, or form, veneers may be an appropriate treatment option. Veneers are thin caps that are designed to sit atop the surface of your natural tooth. The caps are made to imitate the natural look and feel of your teeth and can alter and enhance the length, color, or shape of your teeth to give you healthy teeth and a healthy smile. There are two different types of dental veneers: porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers. Porcelain veneers more closely resemble the natural reflecting properties of teeth and stainless than resin veneers. If your gums are receding, veneers are also available to help restore your smile and appearance of the gums.

What is the process of getting veneers?

The process and procedure for receiving veneers begin with a consultation with your dentist. During the consultation, you and your dentist will discuss your treatment goals and what you are hoping to achieve. To determine if you are an appropriate candidate, your doctor will first need to assess your teeth. This is done through a dental oral examination. X-rays and impressions of your teeth and dental structures may also be used to help your doctor further assess your teeth.

If your dentist determines that you are an ideal candidate for veneers, you will come into the office for your dentist to “prepare” the tooth. Preparation of the tooth involves your dentist removing a small layer of enamel from the surface of the tooth. The thickness of enamel removed is about the width of the veneer that will be placed onto the tooth. After removing the thin layer of enamel, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, which are sent out to a lab where the veneers will be produced. After two to four weeks, the veneers will be ready and you will come in for the second half of the veneer process, known as bonding.

When you come in for bonding, your custom veneers will be permanently attached to the necessary teeth. During this part of the process, your dentist will first temporarily attach the veneer to the tooth to assess the fit and color of your veneer. Once your dentist identifies where further customization is needed, the veneer will be removed for sizing and color adjustments and then temporarily placed back on the tooth to see if any additional adjustments are needed. Your dentist will continue to assess and alter the veneers until it properly fits in with surrounding teeth.

Once the veneers have been modified according to your dental needs, your dentist will prepare your tooth for permanent placement of the veneer. This part of the procedure involves cleaning, polishing, and “etching” the tooth so that the veneer can firmly bond to the tooth. Once the tooth is prepared, your dentist will apply a cement solution to the tooth. The veneer will then be placed atop the original tooth, and a light beam will be used to help the cement harden, speeding up the process for bonding.

After the veneer has been bonded to the tooth, your dentist will clean off any remaining residue from the veneers and make any final needed alterations to the veneer. To check how the veneers are settling in, your dentist may schedule a follow-up appointment
