Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

With dental insurance, you pay a set premium in exchange for receiving dental coverage over a specific period of time. After you meet your deductible, your insurance company will help pay for any dental services that are covered under your plan. There is usually an annual maximum on the amount that insurance companies are willing to pay, so you’ll have to keep that in mind when planning your treatment. Compared to medical insurance, dental insurance is more focused on prevention, which is why regular checkups and cleanings are often fully covered.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

You can call your insurance carrier to get the specifics of your dental coverage. Most plans follow a structure that looks similar to this:

  • Full coverage for checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and other preventive services.
  • 80% coverage for simple restorative procedures, with fillings being a common example.
  • 50% coverage for more advanced procedures such as crowns and root canal therapy.

Cosmetic treatments are elective procedures, so they usually aren’t covered except if they serve some sort of dental health benefit.

We Offer In-Network Savings & Welcome Out-of-Network Providers

When visiting a dentist for the first time, you need to determine whether they’re in-network or out-of-network with your insurance provider. Choosing an in-network provider will ultimately help you save more money on your care; however, out-of-network savings are still available, and the claims-filing process will still be handled by our team. We are in-network with a number of major providers as listed below, but you can call our office to see if your own plan is also accepted.

  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Delta Dental Premier
  • Cigna
  • United Healthcare
