Flaws on Your Teeth

Can a broken tooth be fixed? How can I fix a discolored tooth or teeth? Can I fix the gap in between my teeth? When it comes to teeth, these are some of the questions that may come up. At Cedar Mountain Dental, our dental staff offers a cosmetic dental solution known as dental bonding to help alleviate various cosmetic dental concerns. Dental bonding uses a material known as resin that is bonded to your tooth. This resin material can then be molded to enhance the length, shape, or color of your teeth. Most often, dental bonding is used as a cosmetic solution to help treat chipped, crooked, or discolored teeth. Bonding can also be used for tooth fillings, gapped teeth, and to help treat teeth where the gum recedes. Dental bonding can last anywhere from three to ten years and, if needed, dental bonding removal can be performed if you are no longer satisfied with the results.

What does dental bonding involve?

The dental bonding procedure involves your dentist applying a composite resin material to your affected tooth. The process will begin with a consultation with your dentist, during which you and your dentist will discuss your treatment goals, cost, reviews, side effects, and whether dental bonding is the right treatment option for you. Before applying the resin to the tooth, your dentist will use a shade guide to determine what shade aligns most with the color of your natural tooth.

Once your dentist has chosen a shade that is right for you, your dentist will “roughen” the surface of your tooth in preparation for the dental bonding process. Next, your dentist will carefully apply a conditioning liquid to the tooth. The conditioning liquid will help encourage the bonding materials to stick to the tooth.

When the tooth is ready, your dentist will gently mold and secure the resin to the tooth. To help solidify the resin, your dentist will use a dental laser or UV light. Once the material has solidified, your dentist will make any final and necessary adjustments to the resin material, shaping, trimming, and polishing the tooth until it closely resembles the surrounding surface area of your natural tooth.

In total, the procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The procedure is generally painless and usually does not require anesthesia unless certain medical techniques or procedures are utilized. Once the procedure is complete, your dentist will discuss any special aftercare instructions with you.
